Bought a pigeon GPS tracker but not sure where to start? This complete guide walks you through every step — from unboxing to seeing your first pigeon's location on the map. No technical background required.
Before you start: what you need
- An iPhone, iPad, or Mac (required for Apple Find My trackers)
- An Apple ID (free — if you don't have one, you can create one at apple.com)
- The Loftoria app installed on your Apple device
- Your pigeon GPS tracker (charged)
Step 1: Charge the tracker fully before first use
Connect the tracker via the included USB-C cable. A full charge takes 1-2 hours. The indicator light shows charging status: red when charging, green when full. Don't attach the tracker to the bird until it's fully charged.
Step 2: Add the tracker in the Loftoria app
- Open the Loftoria app and log in to your account.
- Go to "My Pigeons" → "Add GPS Tracker".
- Scan the QR code on the back of the tracker packaging.
- The tracker is now linked to your account.
- Enter your pigeon's details: name, ring number, photo (optional but recommended).
Step 3: Attach the tracker to the pigeon
The Loftoria tracker comes with an adjustable elastic harness. Fitting instructions:
- Thread the harness through the tracker's attachment points.
- Gently place the harness over the pigeon's wings — the tracker sits on the bird's back, between the wings.
- Adjust the harness so it's snug but not tight. You should be able to slide one finger under the harness straps.
- Check that the tracker doesn't obstruct wing movement.
- Let the bird walk and watch for any signs of discomfort — shaking, unusual posture.
Important: first-time wearers may be slightly unsettled. This usually passes within a few minutes as the bird acclimates. If discomfort persists after 10 minutes, re-check the harness fit.
Step 4: Check your first location
Open the Loftoria app and navigate to "My GPS Devices". You should see your tracker with its last known location. If the location hasn't updated yet:
- Ensure the tracker is powered on (button press to wake)
- Walk the pigeon to an outdoor area with line-of-sight to the sky
- Wait a few minutes — a nearby Apple device will detect the Bluetooth signal and update the location
- In densely populated areas, the first update usually appears within 5-10 minutes
Step 5: Daily use and battery management
After setup, daily use is minimal:
- Before training flights: check the app to confirm the tracker is active and battery is above 20%.
- After training flights: when your pigeons return, check the app — the tracker should show your loft location.
- Monthly: remove and charge the tracker. A reminder in the app will alert you when battery reaches 20%.
What to do if the location isn't updating
If you haven't seen a location update in 24+ hours:
- Check that the tracker is powered on
- Verify your internet connection on the app device
- Check if the pigeon (with tracker) is in a location with Apple device users nearby
- If the bird is in a remote rural area, updates may be infrequent — this is normal for the Find My network
- If you suspect a technical issue, contact Loftoria support via the app
