Common Mistakes Before a Race

The most costly mistakes fanciers make in the week before a race — and how to avoid them.

In brief:
  • Overfeeding the day before is the #1 performance killer
  • Changing feed or supplements in race week causes digestive stress
  • Training too close to race day prevents proper rest
  • Ignoring early health symptoms and racing sick birds
  • Overcrowding the transport basket stresses birds before they even reach the release

Races are often lost before the birds even leave the basket. The week before a race is when disciplined fanciers hold their protocol steady and less experienced ones make the changes that cost them results.

Every mistake on this list has been made by serious, experienced fanciers — usually because of anxiety about the upcoming race rather than ignorance. The fix is not knowledge alone, it is a written protocol you follow regardless of how you feel.

Mistake #1: Overfeeding the evening before

Giving the birds "a good meal" the night before the race means they arrive at the basket with a full crop — heavy, sluggish and less motivated to return home.

  • Evening before: normal controlled feed, 30–32 g/bird
  • Basketing morning: small meal only, 15 g, then no feed
  • A pigeon that is slightly hungry at the basket is more motivated to fly home

Mistake #2: Adding a new supplement in race week

  • New garlic extract, new probiotic, new electrolyte blend — the digestive system needs time to adapt
  • Any new product introduced in the 7 days before a race is a variable you cannot control
  • Stick to what you used in the previous 2 weeks; if it worked in training, do not change it

Mistake #3: Training too close to race day

  • A toss 24 hours before basketing means the bird arrives at the basket tired, not rested
  • Last training toss: no later than Tuesday for a Saturday race
  • Wednesday–Friday: rest, with very short orienteering from the loft only

Mistake #4: Racing a bird that is not 100%

  • A bird with slightly loose droppings, one slightly cloudy eye, or slightly laboured breathing will perform below par and may return in worse condition
  • The rule is simple: if you are not sure, leave it at home. One missed race is better than a lost bird
Warning: Never medicate a bird in the week before a race. Most antibiotics and antiparasitics require a withdrawal period, and medicating a bird that then performs poorly makes it impossible to know whether the problem was illness or medication side effects.

Mistake #5: Transport overcrowding

  • Too many birds per basket section = heat stress, bruising and anxious birds
  • Standard: 6–8 birds per section (40×40 cm), never more than 10
  • Ensure ventilation — a closed car in the sun for 30 minutes can kill birds

What to do in practice

  • Write your race week protocol and follow it every single week
  • Add a note at the top: "No changes in race week — trust the protocol"
  • Do a final health check Thursday: any doubts = the bird stays home

Avoiding these mistakes will not guarantee a win, but it will guarantee you are not the reason for a poor result. Start there.
