What is inbreeding?
Inbreeding means pairing two pigeons that share common ancestors — relatives. The closer the relatives, the higher the inbreeding coefficient (F).
A small amount of inbreeding can fix desirable traits (speed, colour). Too much increases the risk of weak immune systems, low fertility and smaller chicks.
How to interpret the result

Common pairing mistakes
- Pairing siblings or half-siblings without checking (F = 25%)
- Using the same outstanding ancestor on both sides repeatedly
- Repeating the same close combination over 3+ generations
- Ignoring the grandfather or great-grandfather when calculating
- Assuming "they look different, so they're not related"
When is inbreeding acceptable?
Breeders with a clear selection goal sometimes use low inbreeding (F 3–6%) to fix desired traits — a good long-distance line, for example.
The rule: a single moderate inbreeding in a generation is not a problem. It becomes risky if repeated over 2-3 consecutive generations without introducing new genetic material.
